Why do you need reports?

This may seem like a strange question, but a clear and concise report can be more powerful than a full breakdown of everything that is available to you. When we are bombarded with too much information, it becomes difficult to find the important information to enable good decision making. To be able to tailor reports suitable for companies, departments, and even down to an individual can save both time and money.

Investing in a flexible system of reporting can save board members and managers from having to scrape through endless information in order to find the facts and figures they need for decision making. It can also aid your sales teams to focus on areas of strengths and weaknesses, or financial teams analyse the past to prepare for the future.

What is available?

There are many ways of creating reports on a variety of platforms, and they can be tailored your company’s needs. Whether you want to work with the full Microsoft BI Stack or whether you need a simple dashboard, there is a reporting system that can work for you. Some of the best and most robust solutions can be implemented quickly and efficiently, it just depends on your needs. At Consolidata we commonly work with Microsoft products, but for specific applications we would use non-Microsoft products:

  • SQL Server Reporting Services – part of the Microsoft BI stack.
  • Power BI – Microsoft’s reporting engine in the Cloud.
  • XLCubed – Microsoft Excel add-on for simple reporting.

What is the next step?

A good reporting solution paints a picture of what is happening in the business at specific points in time. A great reporting solution provides enough information to tell you what to do next, or aids you in making a decision, without being bombarded with too much irrelevant information.

Data-driven businesses feed their internal processes with new data and new insights from it. Reports guide action, which informs how and what data is collected by the business, as well as how it is analysed.

Consolidata can show you what makes a strong reporting solution as well as how to most effectively use your reports and become data-driven. Learn how reporting fits into a larger data strategy or discover how data visualisation can help your team interpret information in a clean and effective way.

Descriptive Analytics

Using descriptive analytics well is one of the bedrocks of becoming a data-driven business, where a business uses data to improve the way it operates.

Score Cards and KPIs

For internal reporting and efficiency management, scorecards and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are a proven way of keeping track of how well teams are performing compared to what is expected, as well as constantly updating what is considered a ‘good’ performance from a management standpoint.

A data visualisation should impart useful information by telling a story, by looking beautiful and more importantly should serve a purpose. A great visualisation also requires no further explanation – you should understand it purely by looking at it.
